Line Drills for Karate

Wednesday, July 29, 2009

Tonight we did some line drills doing some basic front ball kicks, spinning reverse/hook kicks and side blade combos. Feel coordinated doing them but sometimes mess up and skip a kick when doing a set. Then we partnered up to do some basic 1:1 knife techniques as an attacker and defender. I got nicked in the forearm a couple of times but otherwise evaded the knife.

Before class I did an 1/2 hour private still learning Hans Suki form. It’s long.

Circular vs Linear

Monday, July 20, 2009

We started off with countdowns. 10 jj’s, crunches, squats and pushups was the first set, then 9 reps each…down to one. That’s a total of 504 reps of the four exercises above. After reading about poor Tom Watson the golfer and how the sports writers wrote about Tom’s creaky body, poor eyesight and whatever physical excuse they can come up with, they make it sound like if your over 40, you should be thankful that you can still walk. So tonight, I thought I would keep up with the under 40 crowd and finish first. No short cuts. Just do it right. It’s not ego, but to demonstrate that being the oldest in the class doesn’t mean last place.

After that we did some exercises using some circular and linear routines with an opponent.

USSD Karate Training Class Blog

The karate training class this evening was concentrated on basic stances, balance, coordination and targeting. Stuff you wouldn’t use on the street but it was just a good overall workout. Starting in the horse stance, we did front ball kicks, instep, front thrust, side blade, back kick, roundhouse and a hook kick. Each set progressed with an additional kick until it consisted of seven kicks on both right and left side. I do much better while on the left leg and kicking with the right. Balance is a bit off while on the right leg. Then we did this exercise while with a partner. And we did our top 20 kempos with takedowns. I did a 1/2 hour private prior to the class.

Slip Moves and Attack

Monday, July 13, 2009

Tonght we started off doing basic slips without using much effort and hand checking. We were going at a decent pace where if you didn’t slip to the side, you would get a moth full of knuckles. Then we built on that basic move by doing a slip, hand check, palm heel to the sternum, slide the palm heel up to the jaw, wrap the neck and end with a knee to the face or chest. Doing this both righty and lefty. Then we did some takedowns with wrist locks.

Footwork and Sweeps

Wednesday, July 8, 2009

Tonight’s karate training was on footwork. We partnered up and started off doing basic one for one shuffling back and forth with each other. Then we did a simple side blade and the other person counters back. Then it was one person doing a kick, other does a counter and the first person again does another kick. We could do a side blade, hook kick or roundhouse. Whatever works.

Then the next exercise was doing simple kicks to the back of the calve. Then the exercise progressed to doing a full leg sweep with a take down.

I did a private lesson prior to the 7pm class.

Tonight’s adult karate class was doing rapid block counters on punches and kicks. The counters had to be placed fast and precisely without much hesitation. We did various exercises and situations that used the block/counter.

Pad Work Karate

Wednesday, July 1, 2009

Took an hour private in the afternoon, another 30-minute private at 6:30pm and an hour adult karate class. After warm-ups, we tripled up to do some serious pad work with the upper and lower body. Most were spinning hook kicks and other difficult kicks that got quite hard after 10-15 reps.
