Outdoor Karate Training

Tonight’s karate training class was outside in a side parking lot. The weather was nice with no winds. I paired up with another black belt and we did some basic plum tree blocking broken down into each block. First we started out slow and then picked up the pace to a faster speed.

Then the Sensei taught the both of us what seemed like an advanced Kempo move but with no number assigned to it. First it started off with a left cat stance while blocking the punch with your hand, come out of the cat with a left roundhouse elbow to the face, then a right roundhouse elbow to the face, while rotating clockwise to the attacker and landing a right elbow to the ribs followed up with a right shuto to the groin.

After class, I stayed for a private lesson that focused on learning a new kempo move (#25)

DM’s

The karate class tonight just focused on defense maneuvers . First we formed groups of 3 and did our top 15 DM’s. Then we formed a dragon circle with the entire class with one in the middle and 8 on the perimeter. I kept on thinking of what DM’s to do. I didn’t want to do the easier ones that just naturally come out but try some of the harder ones that take a little more skill and precision. In not in any particular order, I did: 1, 5, 8, 9, 12, 18, 20, 23, and 24

After this routine, we formed two lines to go a DM gauntlet. I just focused on DM 23 and 24 and realized I have some more work to do on these two.

Form Review

I missed the previous week due to other commitments but I did practice at home. Tonight’s class was focused on practicing our forms for the upcoming tournament in late April. I performed circle of the tiger twice and was pretty happy with the speed, intensity and overall mechanics of each movement. The Sensei commented that the routine was much better than a few weeks ago. After class I did a 1 hour private with me working on the mechanics of another form and doing DM 22, 23 and learning DM 24.

Forget the Hands - All Legs

Started snowing pretty had at about 5:30p for about 90 minutes so tonight’s karate class was a little light with about 9 people in attendance. I did my private at 6:30pm which on one hand is a positive because I can get home earlier but on the other hand, it can tire you out prior to the 7pm karate class.

After warm-ups, we partnered up to do 20 each front ball, side blade, crescent kicks and then put all three into one 3-kick combination. With private lesson (3 people in it) that entailed about 60 kicks and the 90+ kicks during the main class, that’s a lot of leg kicks in a 90 minute period.
