Tonight’s karate class started off with 80 push-ups and 30 side to side squats in addition to the other exercises. Then we paired up to so blocking drills while the attacker either throws a punch or kicks at you. The lesson was broken down into sub parts starting with a basic hand/arm block to doing a full take-down later on in the lesson. Did a private on Tuesday to brush up on the Plum Tree Blocking.

12 sets of jumping jacks, squats, crunches and push-ups. That’s 78 reps for each exercise for a total of 312 repetitions. After the warm-ups, we did some forms and then partnered up to focus on a few pieces of each form on how practical it is to use. One ended up using a submission choke hold at the end of the move.

Out of Our Comfort Zone?

We started off the class with 50 jumping jacks and about 40 push-ups (each set at a different arm/shoulder position, ) then we went into a different sit up exercise by locking ankles with your partner and we each had to do a sit up in unison while passing back and forth the hand pad. Then we finished up with some stretching.

Next on the agenda were doing our DM’s. After about the 3rd DM, the Sensei had the black belts do the DM + 10 added to it. After this session, we formed two circles of 6 each to do dragon circles doing DM’s. You try and prepare in your head on what you are going to do in a logical order but after the 3rd or 4th DM, you are on just auto pilot. Here are the DM’s I did and listed in not any particular order: #1, #2, #5, #6, #7, #8, #9, #12, #15, #18, #20 and #26 (12 out of 23).

Then we partnered up to do a double wrist hold escape technique. The class ended after that. I thought the session flew by quick which means the lesson was engaging.

Line Drills Karate

Another different than usual class tonight. We did one or two warm-up exercises and then right into forming two lines at the end of the dojo to do line drills. They were fairly basic but still required some right/left coordination in order to get the hand/leg combos in while moving forward in the room.

After that, we partnered up to do some back and forth drills that required using some of the warm-up line drill combos into a fluid 1-2, 1-2 hand/leg combos.

Overall the class was really good and the change of pace made it more interesting too. I stayed after class for a private lesson and focused on DM #22.

What’s Going On…Something is Different

Tonight’s karate class first 2 minutes of warm-ups started off the usual way with push up and crunches. Then we partnered up to continue our warm-ups by doing high kicks to stretch our hamstrings and crunches with punching a pad thrown in too.

Then we stayed partnered up by doing back and forth combos with half mooning frontward and backwards. Near the end kind of did the same exercise but with a hand pad and then a larger pad for some kicks where the pad holder rushes you and you counter with a front ball or a side blade/roundhouse.

Overall the class was very good because the entire routine was different right from the beginning of the class.
