Karate Forms and Katas

This evening we started off doing our eight-point blocks, with counter-strikes along with doing a front ball kick thrown in.

After that warm-up, we did our tournament forms in front of the group. I did “Crane” again along with a little flair thrown in. A couple of recommendations were made and I incorporated them into my second turn doing “Crane.”

After forms, we moved over to sparring. I paired up with another Green/Brown and won the match 2-0 in less than a minute. Then I was paired off with a 2nd degree brown and won the match with a hook kick closely coming to the head.

I Waited Too Long To Post This

Now I vaguely remember what we did in the adult class since I waited 8 days to post this.

This evening we did our tournament forms and I did Stature of the Crane twice. Sensei commented I did the form technically correct and with intensity. I didn’t “puncutate” some of the movements by not slowing down and pausing at some key points in the form.

I’ll work on this some more.

Leg Kicks Like the Rockettes

Tonight’s adult karate class theme was back to the basics. It was taking the most basic front ball kick and breaking down each part of the move into the most simple parts. After this drill, we got the pads and did the front ball kick with speed but under control by attempting to kick at the pad without actually touching it

Belt Test Review

Tonight’s class was sort of a mini belt test review for a few people taking their Yellow-Blue/Green test this Friday. After warm-up, we partnered up and had to do all of our DM’s one after another. After doing 18 of them, we just did 5 each back and forth until the Sensei announced a new topic.

The new topic covered headlock holds and choke hold and how to get out of them.

We Are Going to Chi Sao Tonight

Adult Karate Classes in Highlands Ranch

Our warm-ups were a little abbreviated tonight so it appeared to me we were going to do something different and I was right.

Our stances our not low enough and our feet aren’t deep-rooted. So we spent around ten minutes with our backs to the walls and then lowered our butts to a very deep sitting position. We held this stance for 60 seconds. Then we did the stance while doing the 8-point block, then with counter strikes. My legs felt OK.

After that warm-up, the Sensei announced we were going to do Chi Sao.

Chi Sao, is often translated into English as “Sticking Hands” or “Sticky Hands”. Chi Sao is a training exercise that teaches and enhances your contact reflexes. Regardless of ability, this drill trains you on the sense of touch and also heightens a sense of awareness and allows one to feel and adapt as the hands of their opponent change. Think of Chi Sao as physical chess, as it employs as much of the mind as it does the body.

I felt comfortable in this because it requires good reactions to either block or create an opportunity to sneak a punch in. Use of elbows to block and counter-strike is useful along with using the body to flow with the attackers line of attack. Kind of like Aikido.

One partner I guess wanted so bad to land in some punches inched up closer than normal to me and then kept his hands a foot away from his chest which forced my hands to be less than 6 inches away from my upper body.

I didn’t care because I was still able to sense his hand strikes and still counter back with a body or head blow.
