Kata’s, Forms, Sparring, Kick Boxing

Getting near belt testing again so the Sensei had us go through our forms. I did OK on all of them except of Statue of the Crane. I did all of Statue but added to foot movements that aren’t even part of the form. I recorrected doing the form the second time.

After that we broke up into groups of two and did an exercise that requires you to strike and be struck. First you would either do a hand strike, then a block, then a strike, then strike each others shins (shin to shin), hook kick each others calf and then a roundhouse kick to the gut with some force behind it.

Karate martial arts training pre-Thanksgiving eve.

Tonights class was pretty empty being so close to Thanksgiving. Due to rank, I was in the front row this time since most of the higher ranks were not in attendance.

We focused on doing multiple hand strikes in a combination format. Then at the end of the class, we had to craft up our own Kenpo and perform the Kenpo in front of the class.

Karate, Cardio, Kickboxing, Sparring Training

My back is 90% better (and at its worst, it was a 1 on a scale of 1 to 10 and 10 being the worst) due to avoiding sudden and jerky waist rotations. It’s my first karate injury in addition to nursing a left tennis elbow from throwing a phantom left-handed jab that hyper-extended my elbow tendon.

Tonight’s warm-ups consisted of doing 10 regular push-ups, 10 hands-wide push-ups, 10 diamond push-ups and 10 finger tip push-ups. Piece of cake on all of them and didn’t even take a knee between sets.

Tonight we focused on kicking and punching basics. I still can’t make the boxing to karate transition with my stance and using the arms for protection but its better than it was 12 months ago.

After warm-ups, we formed teams of 3 to do front ball kicks, right hand front knuckle punch and a rear back kick as one complete repetition and having to do 10 sets for the right and 10 sets for the left.

I think the Statue of the Crane sudden torque of the upper body created a muscle strain in the lower back. After taking some easy-on-the-body double privates for a couple of weeks and missing 2 adult classes in a row has reduced the muscle tightness by 50%. I even passed along a note to the Sensei alerting him that I am going at less than optimum effort to let the back heal so that he doesn’t think I am slacking off on the exercises.

This evenings adult karate class in Highlands Ranch Colorado was covering our knife techniques. We partnered up and covered how a knife stab or swipe can come in at you and then how you would react to the situation.

Karate martial arts, karate school in Colorado

I am training through a sore lower back that doesn’t seem to bother me when exercising but tightens up when relaxing. The lower back started to act up when I attained Green belt level. Statue of the Crane seems to aggravate the situation due to the abrupt spinning rotation of the upper body.

This evenings adult class started off with 25 jumping jacks, 40 push-ups, 75 crunches, 25 squats, 10 diamond push-ups, and 20 sissy-squats.

Then we partnered up to do some basic boxing techniques of blocking a punch, slipping the attackers next punch and then countering with a punch to the lower body.

Then we did a complex right hand knife block, left block, right elbow to the face, reach around and grab collar and press left arm on attackers back, right knee to the face, and sweep the leg bring the attacker down to the ground.

I think we did this at least 20 times each.

I may miss Wednesday’s class to give my back a weeks rest.
