Monday’s Karate Class in Highlands Ranch

Women’s Self Defense Classes in Denver and Highlands Ranch

Monday was probably the hardest work out in just 60 minutes. First we did 50-60 jumping jacks, deep knee bends and then did a typical squat thrust with a push-up thrown in before you stand up and start the sequence all over again. By the time I did about 30 of them, I was real tired. The rest of the class looked like beached whales flopping on the beach. We were supposed to do about 50 of these but everybody was dying so the Sensei cut it short. But from that exercise, he has us do push-ups. By now, my deltoids were shot and I could only do 25 push-ups before taking a rest. I never have taken a pause to do push-ups before.

After the warm-up, we again did all of our DM’s and Kata’s but this time we did the Kata’s over and over again. With it being 80+ degrees outside, we were all sweating up a storm.

This Wednesday was devoted to performing all of our DM’s, Kata’s and Pinans so that those up for a belt card invitation can be evaluated. Not much else to report on. We just covered the basics in the class.

Women’s self defense classes: Highlands Ranch, Denver, Littleton, Lakewood, Broomfield, Thornton, Colorado Springs

Tonight’s class was first covering our DM material for an upcoming belt test. I have 12 DM’s learned and did them all OK except for #10. I know what to do but just can’t get the timing down so it looks fluid. Then after that, we again paired up and did our knife strike techniques again. My partner and I are up to 8 knife strikes defense maneuvers which is probably 3-4 more than what is covered at our belt ranks. I didn’t get a belt test card tonight so I will just have to try harder and demonstrate 100% proficiency in my 12 DM’s, 14 Kenpos, 8 knife block techniques and 5 forms.

Wednesday’s 7pm adult class focused on overhead knife strike blocks to defend against a person trying to strike you with an object with the attacker striking down at you from a 12 o’clock angle. We paired off going through all of our learned overhead knife strike techniques and then learned a new one.

After the killer leg warm-up, we paired off with a partner and did some basic hand block and hand strike drills. It basically taught you to how to deflect an incoming punch, press the punch and then immediately counter-attack with a forceful punch to the face.

After that exercise, the class formed two lines with each person facing another person and then we did buddapalm reflex exercises. One person would continually throw strike after strike at you and you had to react and deflect each incoming hand blow.

Wednesday’s Martials Arts Karate Class

This evening we focused on some street fighting attack sequences using your legs and hands to severely disable an attacker. After we broke up into smaller groups of 3-4 people, we practiced some offensive strikes using a front ball kick, then into a spinning back kick with hands on guard. Another sequence involved using a back hand fist to the temple and then following up with the opposite hand a shuto strike to the neck.

This evenings adult class consisted of grouping our DM’s and Kempos into groups of 5 each. Meaning that we do DM 1, then 2, then 3…up to 5. Then DM 6, 7 , 8, etc… Same thing with Kempos with a partner. Once that was over, we learned a few finishing moves that can be applied to a Kempo technique (e.g. sweep to the leg.) After that was done, we got to formulate our own technique using combined Kempos molded into one complete Kempo. This teaches you to react quickly and under stress in order to defend yourself.
