I didn’t think doing bunkai would be that hard tonight but it seemed like everybody wanted to push each other so it was a good opportunity to step it up a bit…even with the orange belts.
It was easy to do a shoulder feign to watch where they would put their hands to counter-block the phantom punch. Do that 2x’s in a row and the 3rd strike would be another feign along with the hand punch past the defenses. Not hard but just trying to break their rhythm of anticipating a punch.
After that we paired up to do various techniques that built upon each other that basically followed this pattern. Rt Outward block/Left punch, rt hand does a right cross, then into a backfist, palm heel to same pad, smash kick to the ribs and then a driving knee to the gut.
Worked up a pretty good sweat.

Hard to believe another year of karate has flown by again. The year isn’t over yet but since it’s mid-November, it’s long enough into the year to reflect back a little bit. Leg endurance and balance continues to be strong in 2011 when compared to 2004 or 2005. It’s a little bit easier to perform some complex routines when it the past, just half-mooning back and forth in the dojo required some thought and coordination.
Tonight’s class required us to partner up and do one for one techniques that required some progressive blocking and counter-strikes, going both right and left handed.

Tonight’s adult karate class was based on various footwork exercises when in the offensive and defensive position. Whether using a front stance or closed side horse stance, different blocks and foot/hand strikes were done.

Did a 1/2 hour private doing master’s blocking and a quick run of my 32 kempos. The main part of the class was with the Sensei showing specific techniques against an overhead and side swinging club. Doing the technique both right handed and left handed.

After warm-ups, we formed lines of three to do all of our dm’s (30). After that, the entire class formed gauntlet lines for us to go down to do some of the dm’s. Brown and black belts were to do the dm right or left handed.
Near the end of the class we learned one of the master’s techniques that was taught at last Friday’s master’s lesson.

Went to Saturday’s tournament to spar and do my kata. It was fun to participate and help the team to earn a point or two.

Tournament Training - started off forming two lines to do one for one our top 15 dm’s and then kempo’s. After every 5 done, we rotated to a new person. Then we lined up to do our tournament kata. I did circle of the tiger and I think it was the best one I had ever did. Slow, deliberate and with power. Sensei said it was excellent. Then we geared up to do some light sparring.

Previous out of town in Vegas for a business conference. Today’s in full tournament mode. I switched to circle of the tiger and did it in front of the group. Did one small wrong hand gesture but everything else is ok. Did sparring for three bouts. Lost 3-2, won 3-0, and lost 3-2. Last bout was with a B.B. and I caught his leg for a sweep but his hands were free for backfist to the nose. I think it’s cracked (not broken.)

Did an hour private tonight some some forms and left-handed DM’s. The regular karate class was centered around tournament training. We warmed up doing left-handed forms: pinan 1 & 2, pinan 3, pinan 4 and kata 1 and 2. Kinda messed up kata 2. Then we did bunkai using our high level form to get an idea where the attackers are doing to yoy when doing the form. It was helpful.
Note: On June 1, a person I was training with did a half-a$$ed fall when I did a take-down on him and he rolled into my right knee. The knee was sore thereafter. I suspect an interior ligament was stretched. It’s been acting up lately and I can feel it when I walk on the right leg. Tonight I can feel the knee and it just doesn’t feel right.
